Tips for Traveling with Baby

Traveling is often a stressful experience. If you're traveling with a baby, however, it becomes even more challenging. Babies have special needs, and it's crucial you anticipate them before taking a trip. Here are some tips to help your travels with baby go as smoothly as possible:

Give yourself a lot of extra time, especially if you're traveling via plane. As you may be aware, airport security can be quite time-consuming. Always try to get the seats in the first row, which are called the bulkhead seats. These often offer a bit more room than the other seats. The more space you can put between you and your baby and the other passengers, the better. Both you and your baby will be more comfortable.

Also, you should provide a bottle or pacifier for your baby when ascending and descending in a plane. The sucking motion will help make the pressurization on the ears a little easier to tolerate.  Always pack for the worst case scenario, and have lots of diapers, wipes, pacifiers, formula, Tylenol, anti-gas drops and a teether or two in your carry on bag.

If traveling by car, take occasional pit stops where you get out and walk around with your baby.  Everyone needs a little fresh air and a break from the road, and your baby is no exception. Always take a stroller with you, because it will make transporting your child and your luggage a lot easier.

No matter how you're traveling, try to adhere to your baby's routine. If there are certain times of the day that your baby dines or naps, don't deviate from your schedule just because you're traveling.  Doing so could cause your baby to become fussy and unmanageable.

If your child drinks from a bottle, a bottle warmer is a must. You may also want to bring some snacks for baby to nibble on like dry Cheerios or animal crackers if he or she is old enough. A cellophane, diaper rash ointment, a cooler filled with bottled water, and a colorful toy your baby can look at and chew on are all important components of a stress-free road trip. Preparation is key to a smooth trip, so make a list of everything you need to take with you and check it twice before leaving!

So let's review: when traveling with baby, anticipate his or her needs. Bring everything you can imagine your baby would need along. Take lots of stretching breaks, stay hydrated and always have something for your baby to nibble on. Now all you need is a lot of patience and a good sense of humor, and you can go anywhere with your baby!
